A Joyeux Noël

December 27th, 2013

After the fun that was Christmas (visiting Mum in hospital) the feast of St Steven was finally upon us, which meant: time to head South. We managed to brilliantly time our departure so that it was between devastating storms, and Gatwick was an oasis of tranquility. Just kidding, it was packed with screaming rugrats… But we weren’t there long.

One very bumpy flight later and we were arriving in Nice. Usual confusion with the bus; the driver told us to get tickets from the office – chaos in the office, eventually bought the tickets on the bus. The driver was in an untypically good mood though, and was wishing everyone a Merry Christmas!

We were soon at the flat, which our friends had left nice and tidy. So we were quickly unpacked and settled in, and off to get some Socca – one portion of which was funded by SimpleSimon 🙂

A reasonable grocery shop later, and we were back at base and easing ourselves into a rather delicious bottle of Argentinian Mendoza (thanks to Audrey and Miles)

March 24

March 24th, 2013

Another lazy Sunday morning. Back still out of sorts, but getting better. A bit rainy but not enough to stop us having a brisk walk along the promenade mid afternoon. Resisted the temptation for une glace on the way back, as well as a large glass of something at Ponchettes!
H whipped up a tasty curry for dinner. Work looms for the morning, so it was off to bed at sensible- o’clock…

So, we had decided to hire a car so that we actually got out of the Old Town. Up the earliest we had been all week to pick it up just off Place Masséna. A Toyota Aygo (ay-go-fk-yourself)
Hmmm. Actually was ok for what it was. It got us up to Eze perfectly well. Mooched around the tropical gardens in the glorious sunshine. Most relaxing. Headed to La Turbie for some lunch and to look at the views. The trophée d’August was quite something!

After dropping the car off, and having some dinner it was off to the Ellington hotel to see Marj and Bev.

Headed off to Gatwick with our pile of luggage… Haven’t quite got the hang of travelling light! Quick stop in the lounge for a bite to eat and, shockingly, the flight was on time!
Arrived at the flat while it was still light-ish which was novel. Was worth the effort to do a proper clean before we left last time – it was all lovely and fresh. Unpacked the important stuff and headed to our fave restaurant – Côte Marais for a fab meal. A perfect start to the trip 🙂

Nice, St somethings day, 14 Feb.

February 14th, 2013

Apparently it is some famous day today. It is my friend Allyson’s birthday, which I think is more important 🙂

Anyway, was slaving away over the laptop, working hard, and there was racket outside – some sort of marching band type stuff:
Parade 2013-02-14

Was gorgeously sunny this morning, a bit cloudy now. Should be back to full sunshine tomorrow, when we are off to Eze. However, we need to get through the Guns N’ Roses Alternative Valentines Day party at the Boscolo hotel tonight first!

Nice, Feb 2013

February 9th, 2013

After a hectic week in Borås, it was nice to be off to Nice for a week. We were on the late BA flight, which was (as seems to be the norm with BA) delayed by 15 minutes. But according to BA, this counts as “on time”. Harumph.
Flight was packed! Some kind of French school trip heading home. At least those Southern French kids got to see some proper weather!
Despite our concerns (the noise level can only be described as somewhat above Brouhaha), the flight was pretty calm. Luckily the sulky teenager who was supposed to be sat next to us managed to squeeze in with her mates.

Chaos ensued in the baggage reclaim when a bag got stuck. Cue “techinal failure” (moving the bag (thanks H!) obviously wasn’t allowed in the union rules). So we all moved to belt 4. Clearly this was a problem, as (half an hour later) belt 3 started disgorging our luggage!

All this excitement meant that the last bus had left, so we scooted round to the taxi rank and hopped in a very jolly taxi drivers cab. Cue lots of French humour, which was rather nice! The Promenade was lined with seats for the forthcoming carnival (which we had totally missed) and we were soon outside Rue Saint-Joseph.

Cue wine!

Back to Borås, Feb 13

February 4th, 2013

Due to a whistle-stop visit in Week 3, it hasn’t actually been that long since I was in Borås, but it was nice to catch up with my buddy Brian as we don’t overlap too often these days. We managed to hookup in the BA lounge for a bacon roll or two before the (as usual) delayed 07:35 to Gothenburg. The flight was good: calm and not too busy.
Picked up the car and headed into I15. Daniel practically climbed on my back as soon as I got to my desk! Lots of plates need spinning,..

After dropping stuff of in Göta we headed into town and fell into Babbel for some well earned refreshment 🙂 We managed to grab some grub in between the beers..

Boxing Day 2012

December 26th, 2012

After our “Killing” marathon it came as no surprise that we missed breakfast!
It was sunny so I cajoled H into getting up and out with the cameras and we headed up the hill to the old chateau. The light was golden and brought the best out of the wonderful colours. We left the hilltop and popped down to the port, via some antique shops, to see if Ken was in the pub. Sadly not, so we meandered back around the coast road to the Promenade and headed home. It was properly dark by this time and we decided to have an early dinner and watch the last few episodes of the Killing. Which was cracking! And so to bed.

Christmas Day, 2012

December 25th, 2012

As it was Christmas we treated ourselves to a lie in…
When we finally dragged ourselves out if bed, the present like was practically shouting at me. After a quick brekkie, H finally agreed to opening a few parcels. Luckily we opened all of them! Lots of lovely things 🙂
By this time it was getting on a bit so we rushed out for a skate along the promenade. Which was fun! Both of us manages to keep upright, and the guys & gals on the promenade we doing some phat tricks. We can only dream of being that good!
Back home to stuff some meat into the bird…
While we were cooking:
Yep, collecting the refuse on Christmas Day!

And our star:
Nice eh?

Cooking took a while longer than expected but once it was ready we settled down to eat and watch a couple of “Killing” episodes. It turned into quite a few though, and at 4am we decided it was bedtime’

Twas the night before…

…the day before Christmas. (eve…), when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
Until 3pm when we got up!
